Winchester school boy designs website condemning River Park rebuild proposals
ELEVEN-year-old Edward Agombar likes nothing better than climbing trees in Winchester’s River Park with his two younger brothers.
But over the two weeks he has been sat at a computer creating a website “Save the Rec” which has had more than 2,000 hits.
The Westgate school pupil was spurred into action by city council proposals to build a bigger leisure centre on a playing field next to the existing building.
The modern centre would provide more swimming pool space and a larger gym but it would mean the loss of green open space and the axing of some trees.
Edward said: “So many people use the park after school and for playing cricket, football, Frisbee, walking dogs, picnicking and a running club meets there.
“I think it is okay where it is,” said Edward who lives in Hyde with his parents and two younger brothers William, nine and Thomas, six.
A techno-savvy neighbour helped him create the website. Dozens of people have posted comments in support of his on-line campaign.
His proud mum, Hazel Agombar, said: “Edward was so bewildered that someone would want to build on the park. It is his way of making a difference.”
