Traffic lights fail in Winchester city centre Traffic lights fail in Winchester city centre

TRAFFIC chaos hit Winchester city centre during rush hour this morning.

A power failure shut down traffic lights in Jewry Street, St Georges Street and Southgate Street at around 8.30am.

But police are manually directing traffic and no accidents have been reported.

The blackout has affected around 40 properties in Southgate Street, the High Street and Royal Oak Passage including several businesses.

Southern Electric said the power cut was caused by a faulty underground low-voltage cable but that a team of engineers were on site carrying out repairs.

A spokesman said: “We are expecting an update very soon and an estimated restoration time. We apologise to all customers affected and we would like to thank them for their patience.”

Winchester City Council is urging motorists to use caution when driving through the city.

It wasn't chaos? I was driving through town just after 9am this morning. The police officer there directing traffic was doing a fantastic job, so props to him!

To be honest, that area seemed to be functioning very well with out the traffic lights. Perhaps a permanent removal or re-think of how they work might be in order.

I walked up St Georges St about 3.30 pm they were still out of action, waiting to cross into Jewry St , no sign of any police, but like David said, it didn't seem to be a problem crossing the road, was unusally uncongested! Lets not forget the original planning probably stems back to 70's so nothing has changed regarding traffic flow, same old lights ect!

No problems when I drove through at 4pm. In fact the traffic flow was much better than usual. Keep the lights out of action please.
