A Roman soldier tells children of his experiences in the army at the City Museum
THE Romans invaded Winchester this half-term.
Winchester City Museum welcomed a legionary soldier in full military garb and a lady in all her finery on Friday (February 22) to enlighten schoolchildren and parents alike, returning on Saturday (February 23).
It’s all part of an effort to show Wintonians how the people of Venta Belgarum, as the city was known in Roman times, lived nearly 2,000 years ago.
Robin Iles, education officer at Winchester City Council Museums, said: "We are always delighted to be able to host re-enactment events like this, as they are very popular with people of all ages and really help to bring the past to life."
Sarah Lawes, from Eastleigh, brought her son Harry, 8, to see for himself.
“My neighbour mentioned it and we decided it was better than sitting in front of the telly. It just kind of brings it to life and he seems to be enjoying it so far so it seems to be worth it,” she said.
Cllr Patricia Stallard, the city’s portfolio holder for culture, heritage and sport, said: “This event portrays a fascinating and influential period of history in Winchester – the birth of modern society as we know it. These entertaining and informative re-enactors brought the city’s Roman history alive for today’s inhabitants."
