A DRIVER is fighting for his life after a crash on a major Hampshire road this morning (Feb 18).
A blue Ford Mondeo came off a bridge on the eastbound carriageway of the A303 at around 6am, landing on a slip road underneath the A34 at Bullington Cross.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Birmingham, was freed by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and was taken to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries to his head and spine.
He remains in critical but stable condition.
Watch manager Chris Roper, of Winchester Fire Station, said: “A Ford Mondeo hit the side of the bridge and landed below on Bullington Cross on its roof. The male driver was seriously injured and was taken to hospital by ambulance.”
Three appliances and a special equipment unit attended from Winchester. Closures and diversions were put in place around the road until 11am.
Police do not believe any other vehicles were involved but are appealing for witnesses to contact Sgt Nigel Burt at Whitchurch Roads Policing unit, quoting Operation Marham, on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
