A MAJOR Hampshire road was closed yesterday (Feb 17) after a car overturned “several times” and came to rest down an embankment.

The A34 was closed northbound at 4pm and traffic was backed up for miles while emergency teams work at the scene, between the A272 and A30 turnings.

Appliances from Winchester, Basingstoke and Stockbridge fire stations attended, freeing three people from a silver Subaru.

The southbound carriageway was closed while the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance helicopter landed at the scene, taking the people to hospital.

Northbound traffic was being diverted back down the road and police urged drivers to avoid the area “at all costs”.
