SOME of Winchester’s most treasured artworks will go on display at the annual Mayor’s Choice exhibition.

The works have been chosen by Winchester mayor Frank Pearson and are normally stored away.

Councillor Pearson said: “It was a privilege to explore Winchester City Council Museums’ art store with the assistance of the curator and to be able to choose paintings of scenes from across the district. The exhibition has also been an ideal opportunity to display items from my own village (Swanmore) that have been carefully collected together and looked after by our village archivist.”

Cllr Patricia Stallard, the city’s portfolio holder for culture, heritage and sport, said: “This year it is rewarding to be able to work with the Swanmore archivist and to give him the opportunity to display some of the village’s material in Winchester.”

Items featured from the mayor’s own parish include 19th century architect’s drawings for work on St Barnabas’ church, First World War service medals and paintings by local artist Vera Tribbeck.

On show will be paintings of Winchester, as well as other towns and villages like Alresford, Wickham, Bishop’s Waltham and Hursley. The event is free to attend and there will be puzzles, a spotter quiz, colouring-in sheets and even an opportunity to become a City Space art expert.

The Mayor’s Choice exhibition opens at City Space on Saturday, January 12 and runs until Sunday, February 3.
