Above-inflation rent increase for 5,000 Winchester households
10:12am Wednesday 5th December 2012 in Winchester
MORE than 5,000 households across the Winchester district are set for above-inflation increases in rent.
The city council is proposing an average increase of 4.2 per cent from April 2013, or £4.12 a week.
Since April the city council has the freedom to set whatever rent it chooses.
Its 30-year business plan proposes an annual increase of inflation plus 0.5 per cent. Another part of the increase is a sum to achieve a ‘target rent’ to better reflect market values, local economic conditions and the number of bedrooms.
A report to the cabinet (housing) committee on Monday (DEC10) states that council rents are on average 35 per cent of the private sector.
Residents’ group TACT said it was concerned about the impact on tenants.
