A WINCHESTER school is one of 78 across Hampshire taking part in an energy saving scheme.

The Westgate School has signed up to EDF Energy’s Switch Off Fortnight which encourages schools to reduce energy consumption and encourage families to do the same.

Some of the measures pupils will take include turning off unused lights and making sure appliances are not left on standby.

The scheme has been backed by London 2012 Olympic gold medallist rower Katherine Grainger.

She said: “In rowing, conserving energy for the long haul is absolutely vital – and the same is true for how we use energy every day. I’m hoping the hundreds of thousands of children at all the schools taking part in Switch Off Fortnight put in gold medal performances.”

It began on Monday, November 19 and runs until Sunday, December 2, with 4,000 schools across the country taking part.
