IT’S no wonder these Winchester schoolchildren look ready for bed after a year of fundraising.

Pupils at Stanmore Primary School raised more than £700 for Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

They took part in various events to raise the funds for the hospital’s Magic Wand Appeal to refurbish the children’s ward.

Children presented hospital consultant, Martha Wyles, with the cheque while continuing their charity efforts by dressing in pyjamas for Children in Need.

Ali Richardson, school library manager, said: “We’re very proud of them. The school council decided they wanted to raise money for local children in hospital and when we found out about the appeal, we thought that was perfect.

“The most popular event was ‘soak the teacher’, with the children throwing revolting wet sponges at staff and they loved it. The staff didn’t as much, as the children were very accurate!

“Martha came from the hospital and said she was delighted to receive the money and thanked all the children.”

Rhys Maidment, 11, school council chairman, said: “I’m really pleased we raised this money for such a great cause.”

Acting head, Darren Nickerson, added: “We are all delighted we raised the money, but it’s a shame the children are such good sponge throwers and I got very wet!”

The money will go towards redecorating the ward and buying new toys for patients. Charity success did not stop there for the school as it raised more than £250 for Children in Need after pupils dressed up in their pyjamas.
