Winchester College has more former pupils in powerful positions across society than most other schools in Britain
WINCHESTER College has been named as one of the most powerful schools in Britain.
The college placed second in a national survey for former pupils high up in politics, the arts, business and charities among other areas.
It follows work by education charity The Sutton Trust which analysed the backgrounds of 7,637 people whose birthdays were listed in The Times last year.
Eton had the most powerful former pupils, with 330 in influential positions, while Winchester College had 92, 18 more than third-placed Charterhouse School, Surrey.
Notable pupils of the college are Lord Howe, Lord Hannay, former land-speed record holder and entrepreneur Richard Noble and Peter Jay, former ambassador to the USA.
