WINCHESTER students have been raising awareness about the dangers of Chlamydia.
Around 90 health & social care (HSC) students at Peter Symonds College have been presenting awareness campaigns to fellow students and helping at health screening sessions.
Sarah Coulbeck, Solent NHS Trust nurse in charge of the annual campaign, said working with the students was really worthwhile.
She said: “Ever since the Symonds HSC students have been involved in helping us to run the programme the numbers of screenings have increased in a very positive way.
“The peer training sessions not only help to raise students’ awareness of Chlamydia, but also to reduce stigma and demystify sexual health issues and the testing processes for sexually transmitted infections.”
Hilary Griffiths, head of the HSC department, added: “The new intake of lower sixth HSC students, working in small groups, talk to groups of their peers about the risks of Chlamydia as well as the functions of the college’s sexual health clinic.
“The overall feedback we get from these sessions is very positive and its success is reflected in the numbers who visit the Chlamydia screening team.”
