Winchester’s annual celebration of floral excellence returned last week. Businesses, residents and children were honoured at the Winchester in Bloom awards night at Winchester Guildhall last Thursday (Oct 18).
It honours flower displays in the private and commercial sectors while children compete in artistic challenges.
A pair of pubs did very well on the night, with The King Alfred in Hyde winning best display and overall commercial excellence awards while The Bishop on the Bridge won for best commercial hanging basket.
Meanwhile in the private sector, Raymond Collins of Hickory Drive, Harestock, had triple success with best new entry, best back garden and overall excellence.
City councillor Robert Humby, one of the private sector judges, said: “Despite the atrocious gardening weather, the participants of the competition rose above this to produce wonderful hanging baskets and garden displays.”
Prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Winchester Frank Pearson with various cups, certificates and vouchers handed out to winners.
Cllr Pearson added: “It is important to see Winchester looking attractive with beautiful floral displays and that this no doubt helped attract the four million day visitors we see each year in the city.”
The Mayor also thanked council officers, Winchester Business Improvement District and the Winchester in Bloom committee for staging the competition.
