Reports of gunshot heard during the night
POLICE are this morning scouring a Southampton wood for a firearm after a resident reported hearing a gunshot last night.
Six youths were spotted fleeing into Bassett Wood from a car that crashed into a lamppost in Aspen Holt at about 8.40pm.
Police sealed off a path into the wood from Spindlewood Close after a 60-year-old resident claimed she heard a gun shot. But they could not find the youths or any evidence of a firearm.
A spokesman said other nearby residents, including an ex-army gun expert, said they heard no shots fired.
A gun dog will be used to searched the woods again this morning.
Police said the grey Peugeot 307 car had not been reported as stolen and the owner would be traced today.

Worst story ever. Seriously, whats the point of it?
Especially as we now have 'gun dugs' to make stories more interesting.

Funnily enough, I want to know if a gunshot has been heard near my home.
If you live somewhere like South Central LA or Rowner, you might think nothing of such a report but some of us live in civilisation.

Funnily enough and gods honest truth I heard gun shots about that time yesterday evening, but was told there was a rifle range in the woods at Lordswood (nearer to Chilworth). It was too light for fireworks, then again never too early for some.

Whats the point in posting on a public messageboard whether or not you heard shots or not?
If you think you did (ex-military or not) then surely you should do have done the proper thing and called the police.
Oh wait, no, you thought the information would be better off on a public messageboard - and people wonder why the country is in the state its in!

If the car crashed it could have been one of the tyres bursting. Has anyone checked the vehicle?

When i first moved to Southampton i rolled into town from the "fly-bridge" motorway, what we saw was an 4 wheel drive type car beside the motorway with some 5-6 proper gunshoot holes throught windscreen and additional 3-4 in the side metal doors, there were police that stopped and looked around.
Lol. this was never seen reported in any local newspaper as i remembered.
How many other incidents like that do we have in our old beloved city of Southampton??
One can just wonder....

I know it may seem non-news but for those of us who use that cut regularly its important to know what's going on, even if its a false alarm.

This "story" looks like the result of another reporter interviewing his/her computer keyboard. Gun dogs don't sniff out guns, they retrieve the shooters kill. At least that point gave my gamekeeper mate a big laugh.
And as for the police searching for a gun hours after the incident........ it all looks like a bit of a shot in the dark.
