Death of popular headteacher

A POPULAR teacher and headmaster who saw generations of youngsters through the Hampshire school he taught at for 37 years has died.

Roy Barton, who was a pupil, a teacher and then headmaster at Chamberlayne Primary School in Chandler's Ford, was 80.

Born in 1927, he was the son of a coach body worker at Eastleigh's railway carriage works and attended Chamberlayne Primary School as a boy before winning a scholarship to Peter Symonds School in Winchester.

On leaving school he served as a sergeant in the intelligence corps in Austria from 1945 to 1948 before returning to Hampshire and completing his teacher training at the former King Alfred's College in Winchester.

His first teaching job was at Chamberlayne Primary School, where he worked until he retired in 1986.

Mr Barton, who was left a widower after his wife Victoria died in 1998, leaves four sons - Peter, Bernard, Victor and David - as well as nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In his retirement he was a keen gardener and a passionate rose grower.

My family worked with and were taught by Roy Barton. A great teacher famous for his rose gardens.

I was taught by Mr Barton in the late 1950's. So sad to hear of his death. He was a great servant to Chamberlayne Road Primary.

It's a pity though that the Echo's policy of having a deliberate mistake in every story is evident in Roy Barton's obituary. Chamberlayne Road School is in Eastleigh ... not Chandlers Ford.

SAD NEWS
We were sorry to hear of the death of Mr Roy Barton an ex-headteacher of Norwood Primary School. Mr Barton was a pupil at Chamberlayne Road Boys School before it became Norwood Primary in 1977. As an adult, he went on to be a teacher here and then headteacher of the school. Mr Barton retired in 1986. Our sympathies go to Mr Barton’s friends and family.
As a tribute to a man whose history is very much part of our school, we would like to create a lasting memory to him in the form of a commemorative plaque to go on the school wall. Any donations towards this plaque will be gratefully received. We would very much like to contact the family to inform them about the plaque if anyone can help.
