Carnival rocked by resignations
ROMSEY'S carnival committee has been hit by the shock resignations of four long-serving members - just weeks after the best summer parade for a decade.
Carnival stalwarts, Jackie Fry, Ian Richards, Pete Lomer and Andy Cash are all stepping down at the end of the year.
All four say it's now time to hand over the reins to others. They also say "increasing work commitments and lifestyle changes" led them to take the decision to stand aside.
Rachel Upfold and Kai Drake say they are prepared to remain on the committee, which has begun the search for new volunteers to help run the town's two annual carnivals.
A new chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer are being sought.
Chairman of the carnival committee, Ian Richards, is now writing to town organisations to see if they are interested in taking over the running of the summer event, which one year ago was threatened with the axe after poor attendance and lack of entries.
Mr Richards said: "Following the success of this year's carniva, it is clear that the desire to keep this long-standing traditional alive continues to be strong. The carnival comes ready-packaged as a recipe for success, so there's never been a better time to become part of the committee."
And the carnival committee's newest member, Rachel Upfold, whose family entered the shows regularly priors to her joining the event's organising team, is encouraging people who want to see both the summer and winter carnivals continue to come forward.
"It's great fun and very rewarding and there is a real feeling of support from Romsey and the surrounding area this year, both in terms of participants and spectators. I have heard many participants talking about what they plan to enter as next year, along with some spectators talking about entering for the first time," said Rachel.
Committee members who are standing down say they will still be on hand to offer advice to any new committee to start with.
Anyone interested in joining the committee is asked to contact present members by e-mailing Mr Richards. His e-mail address is chairman@romseycarnival.co.uk, or by writing to the secretary, Jackie Fr, at 46, Mountbatten Avenue, Romsey SO51 8DZ. All enquiries should be made by December 31.
The committee says that if no volunteers come forward to form a new committee at the AGM in January, the assets of the present committee will be disposed of.
