North of borough to accommodate 1,100 extra homes

ROMSEY has escaped the latest round of new housing allocations in the South East (England) Plan.

However, borough planners will have to find room for a further 1,100 homes at Andover to meet the Government's 15 per cent increase on the original housing targets for the region.

Borough deputy leader and cabinet spokesman for planning, Martin Hatley, said: "While we do not underestimate the challenge that meeting housing requirements will bring over the next 20 years, we are pleased that the Government has recognised the realistic proposals put forward and has not increased allocations for southern Test Valley or local authorities within the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire."

Planners say the proposed additional housing at Andover has raised a number of issues and officers will be compiling a response to send to the secretary of state once discussions with the Environment Agency, Southern Water and the Government office for South East England, have been held.
