A KING'S Somborne resident fears dognappers are on the prowl after the disappearance of pets in the village.
A number of dogs are currently missing and the village Post Office noticeboard tells the story with adverts appealing for information about missing dogs - one person has offered a £1,000 reward for the safe return of two pets.
Kitty Herridge and her family were devastated by the sudden disappearance of their two terriers and a German Shepherd-Rottweiler cross.
When the dogs went missing Kitty informed the police but she did not believe they had been stolen at the time. However, she has now changed her mind.
"Our three dogs (all bitches) went missing on February 5 from our home. My daughter let them out at 7am and when my son went to bring them in less than an hour later they had gone. We have had no positive sightings of them since.
"We have walked Farley Mount from dawn until dusk and surround woodland to no avail. We contacted all the local dog wardens, gamekeepers, notified the police, put up hundreds of posters and posted them on the Dog Lost website," said Kitty.
The two terriers - one a black Patterdale and the other a sandy and black border terrier - had red collars on and were microchipped but Mollie, the German Shepherd Rottweiler, did not have her collar on that morning.
Kitty said: "Molly has never gone far and is very protective of us and Dinky (border terrier) has had an operation on her back leg, so she would not be able to go that far. Now we believe they must have been stolen because there has been no positive sightings."
Borough dog warden Helen Pugh is urging people to microchip their pets to make it easier to reunite them with their rightful owners should they get lost or are stolen.
"Legally all dogs have to have a collar and tag but it makes it easier to find the owners if a lost dog is found or if it's stolen if it's microchipped.
"If people believe their dog has been stolen they should tell the police. Mrs Herridge has contacted us and I know her missing dogs have been advertised all over the country," said Helen.
Lost dogs should also be reported to the borough's dog wardens on 01794 527700 during normal office hours and Lost Pals on 0870 6091449 at other times.
