TVBC mayor selection to be reviewed
TEST Valley's cabinet is to review the way borough mayors are chosen.
It follows a motion put forward by the Lib Dem party leader, Len Gates, and the last Lib Dem mayor, Rod Bailey, calling for an overhaul of how Test Valley's first citizens are selected.
And borough leader, Ian Carr, told the full council on Wednesday that he had "no issues" with the two Liberal Democrats motion, which asked members to ensure the mayoral role remained non-political and that the best candidate was selected to the high-profile role.
Cllr Gates claimed that, unlike many other local authorities, Test Valley did not have an agreed procedure when it came to nominations for mayor and he called for one to be put in place.
Responding to Cllr Gates's request, Cllr Carr said his views were already well-known and that he had told the Lib Dems in the past he'd discuss the idea of a new procedure. Cllr Carr said Cllr Mark Cooper was asked to get in touch with him about the matter, but hadn't.
Cllr Cooper joked that he must be getting "very, very old", because he didn't have any recollection of Councillor Carr inviting him to talks about it.
Councillor Bailey said it was important to get something in what he described as "black and white" on the procedure for selecting future mayors. He added that the public would welcome this.
Members unanimously agreed and the matter will now be dealt with by the authority's new-look cabinet.
