NEW life was breathed into a village authority near Winchester with the election of six new councillors.
The newcomers will join six reelected members to Kings Worthy Parish Council, which last Thursday had its first election for nearly two decades.
Dawn-Marie Cox, former vicechairman of the parish council, was one of three councillors to lose their seats. James Marshall and Derek Smithers also missed out.
Parish chairman Peter Warrener was narrowly re-elected with a cushion of around 25 votes. Sarah White topped the poll with 434 votes on a turnout of just 19 per cent.
A key election issue was the campaign for play facilities for children at the village green off London Road.
The playground campaigners Terry Bohle and Kim Torkington had mixed fortunes. Mr Bohle was elected, but Ms Torkington narrowly missed out.
Anti-speed campaigner Amanda Read, who wants a 30mph limit on Springvale Road, was elected.
One new councillor, Judith Steventon Baker, said: “It’s a brave new world and I’m thrilled to bits. I think it’s a good forwardlooking result and I just hope we can all get on.
“I hope any issues which arose in the run-up to the election can be set aside, so we can do the best for Kings Worthy.”
It was the first election since 1991 because since then there have been insufficient candidates to trigger a poll. Residents have been co-opted onto the council to fill the numbers.
Elsewhere, nearly half of the electorate in Tichborne voted in its parish poll, which enjoyed a 45 per cent turnout.
Nicola Roper, landlady of the Tichborne Arms — which doubled up as the polling station — proved most popular with 44 votes. Existing councillor Christopher Norkett was one of two to miss out.
John Barker, with 126 votes, narrowly missed out on being elected onto Curdridge Parish Council, with Christine Weaver ahead of him by just six.
Aileen Miller, a former chairman of Bishop’s Sutton Parish Council, was re-elected onto the five-person authority. Clive Cook, with 59 votes, missed out.
