SCORES of pro-Remain residents from Winchester travelled up the M3 or took the train to take part in the Unite for Europe protest march in London.

Various groups including the European Movement Hampshire, The 48%-Winchester, The 3 Million, Scientists for EU and Liberal Democrats travelled to London to join the march on Saturday.

The National March to Parliament was estimated to have attracted between 50,000 and 100,000 people angered at the hard-Brexit stance of the Government.

Jim Maynard, former Liberal Democrat city councillor, said: “Winchester voted to remain on June 23. We want to remain in the EU. We want our voices to be heard.”

Barbara Knight said: “We value the peace, friendships, relationships, business and academic collaborations, economic prosperity and outward-looking attitude that European Union membership delivers.

Susie Nicodemi said: "I voted remain. I believe that we are better off inside the EU. I respect people for the value they bring to the community, without judging where they were born. The direction that the current government is taking us is dangerous and risible. This march was one of the ways I could show my opposition."

“It was worthwhile celebrating the 60th birthday of the Treaty of Rome / EU. My banner on the march read: 'The best possible deal is to stay IN!', said Colin Keppel, of Droxford.

Marianne Gemmeke, from Winchester, added: “It was so nice to be surrounded by like-minded people. It gave us a sense of hope and allowed us to express ourselves. We thought this was a preliminary advisory referendum. Then suddenly it’s a done deal."

“I’m appalled that people who have lived here for 20 years should be treated as bargaining chips. The government should have guaranteed their right to stay from the outset”, said Janice Whittle, from Winchester.
