IT IS the truck that is supposed to get everyone into the festive spirit.

Yet the Coca-Cola Christmas truck is today at the centre of a row after a senior councillor criticised it for promoting sugary drinks.

Frank Pearson, Winchester City Council’s environment, health and wellbeing cabinet member, said he was saddened by the council’s decision to allow the marketing vehicle into the city yesterday.

Cllr Pearson added: “I am very sad that this has happened because I work to promote healthier drinks.

“Rotting teeth and the growth of diabetes are an increasing problem with younger people.

“I am not sure it was the right decision (by the council) and I have strong reservations about it.

“However, with my council hat on, it is a great thing for Winchester and for local businesses as it has drawn a lot more people to the city.

Cllr Pearson said that he was off work with an illness when “important decisions” about the truck were made, but he was not aware that his team were part of those discussions.

Coca-Cola responded to the claims, saying staff only gave out smaller 150ml cans and Coke Zero, the no-sugar option, was also available.

A spokesman added: “The Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour provides a moment of fun for the family in the build-up to Christmas and we had a great response from the community today in Winchester."

Situated outside the Guildhall on The Broadway, Coca-Cola gave away drinks to more than 7,000 people.

It is the only time the truck will stop-off in Hampshire this year.

Before the event, the city council advised commuters to take public transport to avoid any unnecessary gridlock.

However, city centre car parks were full by midday.

David Jameson and his wife Becky said the Coca-Cola adverts marked the start of their Christmas each year.

“I love the adverts because you really know that Christmas is just around the corner,” said David.

“The amount of people that have turned out for this is just crazy.

“I can’t believe the queue is that long just for a picture, at least they are giving away free Coca-Cola.”
