WINCHESTER will have no problem coping with the closure of the Friarsgate Multi-Storey car park, Council was told.

Cllr Ernie Jeffs, portfolio holder for communities and transport, said the loss of 131 substandard spaces would be compensated by the other central parking.

He said the city centre still has 2,829 spaces as well as 1,623 at the park and ride sites.

There are five central car parks nearby: Upper Brook Street, Middle Brook Street, The Brooks, Colebrook Street and Chesil Multi-Storey.

He added: “It should also be noted that, with the exception of Christmas, the Friarsgate car park is rarely ever full and we are confident that there is sufficient parking elsewhere to cope with its closure including when events like the farmers’ market are held.”

The issue was raised by Lib Dem leader Kelsie Learney who said the closure has raised considerable concern…to our smaller retailers and residents at a time when the Silver Hill judgement has created uncertainty about the future of Winchester’s town centre.”

Cllr Jeffs said Friarsgate, built in the 1970s, was now so badly corroded that it has reached the end of its economic life. Many of the floors have already been closed because of safety fears.
