WINCHESTER and nearby villages have been struck by flash floods as torrential rain batters Hampshire.

Cars are moving through floodwater in parts of Harestock, Stanmore, St Cross and the city centre, while roads in Highbridge and Eastleigh have been closed.

Middle Brook Street is flooded near its junction with Friarsgate while large pools have collected at the bottom of Priors Dean Road Harestock.

Police have shut Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh, where cars were moving through two feet of water.

This morning’s downpours also led to a burst manhole in Kiln Lane, Highbridge, where water is “pouring into the River Itchen,” according to Cllr Moore.

Highways chiefs are considering closing the road, but Kate Davey, of nearby Brambridge Garden Centre, said: “It’s just the usual.”

Traffic is flowing normally, Ms Davey added.

No properties are known to have been damaged.
