NOT for Bishop's Waltham residents, the car-free life.

A new study has found workers in the town have the longest commutes in the Southampton area, travelling an average of 24 miles a day to get to work.

And residents with an SO32 postcode are among the most likely to travel by train – despite Bishop's Waltham's rail facilities being somewhat lacking.

Two per cent of town respondents said they commute by train, the seventh highest rate in the region. Belgarum assumes this follows either a car journey or a very long walk to the nearest station in Botley.

By contrast, 12 per cent of Bishopstoke residents walk or cycle to work.

Commissioned by Royal Mail, the analysis by the Centre for Economic and Business Research showed that, unsurprisingly, the outskirts of Southampton had the shortest journeys. Meanwhile, Hythe and Warsash joined Bishop's Waltham on the map of sore spots for commuters.
