WINCHESTER civic chiefs are looking at ways of saving money lighting their park and ride which shines like a “Christmas tree.”

Councillors raised concerns about light pollution at the South Winchester park and ride near Compton.

Cllr Linda Gemmell told the overview and scrutiny committee: “It still looks like a Christmas tree. My husband who travels a lot says coming home to Winchester there is always a beacon in the distance.”

Cllr Mike Southgate, portfolio holder for communities and transport who represents Compton, said: “I get constant complaints from local members and the parish council.

“The principal reason is CCTV needs light to monitor cash points. Without CCTV other activities will take place which is undesirable. I will work on it because light levels are very high.”

Cllr Southgate said he was looking into putting solar panels on buildings at the park and ride sites to make them self sufficient.
