AS children performed in front of proud parents and teachers a village near Winchester filled with the harmonious melodies from a bygone age.

Pupils at Twyford School took the congregation for a tuneful trip down memory lane with a special WWI commemoration service at St Mary’s Church.

It was the final part of a project the school had been undertaking for several weeks after initially making a CD full of songs from the front earlier this year.

The concert featured the senior choir, junior choir and Viva Voces, directed by the school’s head of music, David Hall.

“We gave a live performance of all the music on our recent CD Keep the Home Fires Burning,” he said. “The CD has songs that were popular during World War One such as Pack Up Your Troubles and Daisy, Daisy.

“The concert was superb. It was standing-room only in the parish church. The audience sang along with great enthusiasm at the end for Pack Up Your Troubles, It's a Long Way to Tipperary and the school hymn Jerusalem.

He added: “The two choirs are superb - they are smart, well-drilled and attentive to the conductor. They sing with enthusiasm, character and expression. It was great to see members of the wider community join with the school community to enjoy the concert.”
