RESIDENTS of Compton and Shawford are set to mark the centenary of WW1 with a Great War Day.

On Sunday (August 3) villagers will come together on the Memorial Playing Fields in Compton to commemorate the occasion in addition to their annual cricket match.

The match is for the Steve Brooks Memorial Trophy.

There will also be an under-16s football match and a senior match, as well as an under-9s tournament and a tennis tournament, between the two villages.

At 8pm there will be a rededication service of the two war memorials on Shawford Down and a service will be held at the Wooden Cross to remember the hundreds of thousands of servicemen who passed the site en route to the sea ports.
