A KINGS Worthy girl who had her bike stolen and smashed got something better in return as the community came together to buy her a new one, Luke Addison writes.

Ella Shepherd, aged nine, was devastated to learn thieves had taken her bike from her home in Kings Worthy last month.

But now she is riding an upgraded replacement after her family appealed for help on social media.

Dog walker Kirsty Howell found the damaged pink bike in woods near the village and posted a photo to FaceBay Winchester, an online marketplace for used goods.

Ella’s father, Scott Atkins, an electrician, identified the bike but found it had been intentionally destroyed.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Rosie Leigh, Ella's godmother, posted to the group asking if anyone would pledge towards a replacement bike for the heartbroken youngster. Residents and organisations including PeaceJam Winchester and Winchester People of Action raised £70 in less than two hours.

Miss Leigh contacted Halfords, who agreed to upgrade Ella to a bigger bike, with a lock and helmet thrown in for her upcoming birthday.

Ella’s mother, Rosie Marshall, said: “Everyone's been fantastic and Halfords deserve the positive press too, as they didn't have to help either!”

The nine-year-old is now riding her purple and black bicycle through Winchester. She said: “I am very, very happy. It was really cool and amazing. Thank you to everyone for helping me.”
