THE third Winchester scouts has seen the number of young people joining surge over the past year.

Robin Cook, group scout leader for the Worthies and Itchen Valley units, said that the troop now has five units, with over 100 young people.

The same time last year there were only three units in the area, but two new Beaver colonies have seen that number increase.

Mr Cook said: “The aim is to have a waiting list of zero. We have had a great increase recently, and actually parents whose children were waiting have started to help out. It is all about flexible volunteering, not filling a specific role - what can people do, and what do they want to do.”

He said the aim is to have ten different sections, and also move into a larger facility that is better equipped for 21st century scouting.
