A WONSTON woman has completed a 100km walk for charity.

Pip Varley, 59, strode from London to Brighton to raise money for Blind Veterans UK.

She did the walk as part of doing a challenge every month before her 60th birthday in November.

Mrs Varley, a learning support assistant at Longparish Primary School, said: “I wanted to try lots of different things and challenge myself before my 60th birthday. I have already had a New Year’s’ Day swim in the sea, a 10-mile run and turned a wooden bowl. I will be taking part in a blindfolded 10k run round the Olympic Park in November.

“This 100km walk was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

The mum-of-three volunteers as a guide for guide dogs and also coaches goalball, a sport played by the vision-impaired.

Mrs Varley added “I know the amazing work that Blind Veterans UK do and I wanted to use my challenge to support such an amazing charity that helps blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women keep their independence.”

“It was such a fantastic experience and I felt a real sense of achievement by finishing. The toughest part was just before half way when you realise that you have to walk the same amount that you have just walked all over again.”

She did the challenge with Annie Pike and her brother Nick Caplin who is the Chief Executive of Blind Veterans UK.
