RECORD numbers flocked to Micheldever on Saturday for its traditional village fete.

Around 1,000 people enjoyed the sun, games, races and activities to raise more than £10,000 for the village church.

Opened by a fly-past from Popham Airfield for the first time, Micheldever Summer Fete also saw archery, live music, an auction and more.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Emily Obbard's spaniel, Daisy (above), won 'Prettiest Bitch' at the dog show, which attracted more than 50 entries.

The event on the Lord Rank Playing Field, helped by more than 70 volunteers, hosted a 'sumo wrestling' championship. Youngsters went toe-to-toe in bulky sumo suits in what is believed to be a village first.

Winchester MP Steve Brine stayed out of the ring, but opened the fete, served pints at the bar and presented rosettes to winners of the Bob Kart go-karting race.

He said: "I really enjoy this event and it's one we always attend so it was a special treat to open it this year. It has to be said, I've opened a few fetes in the past five years but to do one with the support of a fly-past from nearby Popham was a first for me!"

Music was provided by the 1st Chandler's Ford Boys Brigade Band, which has entertained for over 40 years, while visitors could enjoy rides on a carriage drawn by two horses.

All proceeds from the day went to Micheldever's St Mary's Church. The total haul is set to eclipse the all-time record of £10,100, while the prize draw raised a record £1,500.
