COUNCILLORS in a community that was severely disrupted by flooding last year have said they will step up their emergency action plan.

At Monday’s (May 11) Kings Worthy Parish Council annual general meeting, chairman Cllr Stewart Newell said volunteers have come forward to be included on their flood action plan.

He said: “Last year flooding was major issue we are really pleased there was not any this year. We have published our own flood action plan which details the parish council’s role in the event of flooding. It lists all of the important contacts for an emergency.”

It also details areas most at risk.

Cllr Newell added that the council wants to extend it for all general emergencies in the future.

In February 2014 the village came to a standstill after severe floods blocked major roads, including Springvale Road and areas of Lovedon Lane.

Drainage maintenance works and investigations have since been carried out by Hampshire County Council, but Cllr Newell said there is still more that could be done.

“There is no major funding available,” he said.

“They [HCC] have promised to keep spending money for the first quarter of the year. It’s to make sure the drainage there works as best as it can.”
