HEADBOURNE Worthy parishioners have bid adieu to their rector who is leaving after 12 years in the role.

Alan Gordon, who looks after St Swithun’s Church and St Mary’s in Kings Worthy, is leaving for pastures new in the Diocese of Lichfield.

The former Area Dean’s role as Vicar of Tamworth will take him closer to his children and grandchildren.

Residents gathered at the Winchester Hotel to present Mr and Mrs Gordon with a cheque, a framed photo of the church and a basket of flowers.

Churchwarden Brian Porter said: “Thank you for everything you have done for us in the last 12-and-a-half years.

“You have worked extremely hard for everyone in the benefice. We hope you are leaving us with happy memories. “We wish you both health, happiness and success in your new venture.”

During his time, Mr Gordon has baptised 23 children, married 35 couples and officiated “too many funerals”.

Alan said: “I am humbled by your generosity, your kindness, love and support to Eleanor and I over the last 12 years. “This was my first parish and it was a steep learning curve for me. I have grown to love St Swithun’s and those who are part of it. It has been a privilege to be able to serve you in the parish.”

Mrs Gordon added: “I am overwhelmed by the gift. I have been very happy here, so it’s a big thing moving somewhere new. We go with lots of happy memories and very good friends. “Thank you for being so caring, patient and loving. It’ll be sad for us to go.”

Mr Gordon’s last service in Kings Worthy will be on Easter Sunday at St Mary’s Church.
