DOZENS of residents at a village near Winchester braved the cold to unveil the newest addition to their community, wirtes Megan Fisher.

Compton and Shawford Parish Council was joined by Winchester and Chandler’s Ford MP Steve Brine and villagers for the launch of the outdoor gym at Compton’s Memorial Playing Field.

Parish councillor Myra Wilkinson said: “Before ceremoniously removing the ribbon, sports club president Paul Murray reminded those present that the impetus for the gym equipment came from the parish's Great War Day in August.

“Using the motto 'they gave us a sporting chance', the Great War Day had commemorated those who had perished in the service of their country.”

Mr Brine cut the ribbon at the new space - funded by the city council’s Open Space Fund – before taking the opportunity to use the new apparatus.

The site includes a new cross trainer, ski machine, chest press and assisted pull-up bars.
