Raymond Blanc kicks off fine food show

CELEBRITY chef Raymond Blanc will be sharing his culinary skills this weekend as he takes part in Winchester Cathedral's Fine Food and Wine show.

The event is now in its second year and is taking place in the historic Outer Close today (Saturday May 3) until Monday (May5).

This year it is supported by Monsieur Blanc and the team from his newest restaurant Brasserie Blanc, based in Jewry Street, Winchester.

Just before the special gala evening last night, (Friday May 2), Monsieur Blanc said: "What is really wonderful is we are starting to talk about food. We are connecting food with culture. We will reconnect with the morality of food and the real issues of growing food and reconnect with local values and help our farmers and support them in creating a food chain that is more thoughtful and more sustainable.

"These kind of events are all part of creating that kind of awareness. This is only the beginning, but all great things have a beginning and the beginning is the hardest part."

Monsieur Blanc will be carrying out cookery demonstrations throughout the weekend, but said he would certainly find time to look around the stalls to see what was on offer.

Following a successful debut last year, which attracted more than 4,000 visitors, the Fine Food and Wine Show includes a new kitchen theatre where all kinds of demonstrations, presentations, tastings and displays will take place over the three days.

The show is sponsored by Penningtons Solicitors, and supported by local companies Caviste Wine Merchants, based in Stockbridge, Cono Sue Wines, Bendicks Chocolates and Pure Spain.

Exhibitors from across Britain have come to show off and sell a wide range of delicious and interesting high quality products.

Stalls include several specialist food and drink stalls, including Swiss cheeses, freshly cooked raclette, fresh products from Devon, froie gras from the Dordogne and rarities such as goats milk fudge and hibiscus drinks.

Entrance to the show costs £2.50 for adults, and children go for free.

One ticket allows re-admission during the entire three days.
