THE Conservatives have fought off a strong challenge from the Lib Dems to retain control of Winchester City Council.
The Tories were successful in five out of the six seats they were defending in Thursday's elections, including the key Compton and Otterbourne ward of city council leader George Beckett.
It means they will remain in power at the Guildhall for at least two years, with city council elections not due again until 2010.

The Lib Dems, who were defending 11 of their seats, had the most to lose from the election. But they put in a strong showing and managed to boost their overall presence on the council by one.
Most notable was the election of former council leader and mayor Allan Mitchell in Winchester's St Barnabas ward.
The Conservatives have 29 councillors on Winchester City Council, the Lib Dems 24 (up one) and Labour, one. There are three independent candidates, one less than last year.
