Parish councillor jailed for theft from employer Parish councillor jailed for theft from employer

AN Alresford parish councillor has been jailed for 32 months for a £1.2 million fraud against his employers.

Christopher Norkett, 44, a telecoms manager, created bogus order for mobile phones that were never delivered, Reading Crown Court heard.

Norkett, of Raebarn Close, Cheriton, a parish councillor in Tichborne and later Cheriton, was arrested in December 2009 by Hampshire police after his employer, Cable and Wireless in Bracknell, were alerted to irregularities in Vodafone’s bills.

The court heard the firm discovered he had placed several suspicious orders for phones.

During a search at his home a pump action shotgun was seized. Norkett, a country sports enthusiast, did not have a firearms licence for the gun.

A confiscation order hearing will take place at Reading Crown Court on May 18.

The fact that this man is a parish councillor is irrelevant to the story, and should not have been included. I'm surprised you didn't title the story 'Cat owner defrauds employer' which is just as irrelevant.

It is irresponsible, gutter-raking journalism and does nothing to enhance the name or standing of the 'Chronicle.'

Ridiculous and shameful to protect this individual.Obviously a resentful 'friend' of the above 'councillor'.Well done Chronicle for reporting these alleged crimes, in the public's interest - more please. The public need to know what kind of people purport to represent them.

Ridiculous and shameful to attack this individual.Obviously a resentful 'friend' of the above 'journalist'.Well done Chronicle for reporting these REAL crimes for which a conviction has been secured (rather than alleged- ask and adult for help if you don't understand), in the public's interest - shame that that self same public is unable to appreciate what you are doing, and when you are doing it wrong.

Is Goldenwight a humourist or an idiot? irresponsible journalism? The man was a parish councillor when he committed the crime, a public position. Very relevant. So it is not the same as being a 'cat owner', a private hobby.

...and then Goldenwight says "Well done Chronicle for reporting these REAL crimes for which a conviction has been secured (rather than alleged- ask and adult for help if you don't understand)".... is he/she saying papers should not report 'alleged 'offences, ie anything in the courts before conviction? Reporting everything in the courts is in the public interest.
