A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after a horrific crash on a notorious road near Winchester.
The 20-year-old is in a critical condition after the two-car crash that injured seven people - including four children.
Two air ambulances and five double-crewed ambulances were needed to take all the casualties to three different hospitals, following the collision between a red Ford Fiesta and a grey Fiat people carrier at the junction of Morestead Road and Longwood Road, Owslebury.
The Fiesta was flipped over in the crash and fire crews had to cut people out of the wreckage.
The driver, a 20-year-old man from Guildford, was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with serious head injuries and was late last night described as being in a "critical" condition.
His passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Guildford, was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital, suffering what police said were "serious" injuries.
The five people in the Fiat - a 43-year-old woman from Shirrell Heath, near Wickham, and four children aged between ten and 15 years old - were all taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, some also suffering serious injuries.
Police closed the road for more than five hours after the collision, at around 1.15pm yesterday (Sunday march 7), to allow for medical operation and a thorough investigation of the scene.
Officers are now appealing for anyone who saw the crash, or either car beforehand to get in touch.
Anyone with information should call Sergeant Wayne Voller at the Roads Policing Unit at Cosham on 0845 045 4545, quoting Operation Cambric.
