Sixth-formers on night shift

SIXTH-FORMERS at Winchester College are doing their bit to help the homeless by volunteering at the city’s night shelter.

Their work coincides with Poverty and Homelessness Action week, which started last Sunday.

The college has worked with the Winchester Churches Night Shelter for more than a decade.

Each term, a pool of 15 sixth-formers takes turns to provide a helping hand at the shelter in Jewry Street.

Winchester College Maths teacher, Peter Cornish, who helps to run the volunteering, said: “Every evening during term time, a boy from the college helps with the washing upafter the evening meal at the night shelter.

“It teaches our boys about service to the wider community and helps them appreciate their own circumstances.”
