AROUND 700 Winchester homes were without power last weekend.
Residents heard loud bangs at a substation in Greenhill Road, Fulflood, at 4.45am on Saturday shortly before a power cut.
A spokesman for Southern Electric confirmed the noises were caused when large fuses in the substation shorted out due to an underground cable fault.
Power went out at homes in Greenhill Road, Chilbolton Avenue, Milverton Road and Gordon Avenue but was quickly restored at 6.30am.
The spokesman said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during the power outage on Saturday morning.”
