WINCHESTER Street Pastors have been boosted in their efforts to keep the city safe by a wave of new recruits.

Nineteen volunteers were commissioned at a service at Christ Church in Christchurch Road last Saturday (March 24).

The new pastors have spent months training and join 45 pastors already patrolling the city streets on Friday and Saturday nights.

It will enable them to extend coverage to Thursday nights after Easter to help out on one of the busiest nights of student activity on the week.

The commissioning service was performed by Canon Paul Townsend of St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Jewry Street and was followed by the pastors’ first annual celebration dinner and AGM, attended by 130 people.
