THEY have been providing a vital service to the community for 125 years – often being the difference between life and death.

Supporters and members of St John Ambulance Hampshire gathered to honour that dedication as part of the national charity’s milestone celebrations.

A service of thanksgiving and rededication was held at Winchester Cathedral, attended by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and President of the Council of St John Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan.

A procession, which included the Colour of St John Ambulance Hampshire, the clergy, members from St John Badger and cadets and adult members of the charity, made its way down the aisle of the cathedral.

The congregation, lead by the Dean of Winchester, the Very Reverend James Atwell, included representatives from the County Management Board and the Council of St John Hampshire.

St John Ambulance has been providing first aid, care and transport to communities across Hampshire for the last 125 years.

The charity has more than 40 volunteer groups across the county and more than 1,300 members.

Last year, St John Ambulance volunteers gave more than 200,000 hours to the Hampshire community and treated more than 2,500 people.

“It was an incredibly moving service,” said George Ringrow, County Chief Executive Officer for the charity in Hampshire.

“We were thrilled to see such an amazing turnout by our members and supporters.

“We have such a committed group of volunteers in St John Ambulance and it is through their hard work, belief and dedication that we are here today.”
