AN AMBULANCE was called after a senior Hampshire county councillor yesterday fell ill at a conference.

Conservative Mel Kendal, who represents New Milton, was treated by paramedics at the General Electric Smart Grid Technology Centre based in Bracknell but was not taken to hospital.

A county council spokesman said: “He received treatment there and his condition immediately improved. He is currently on his way home to Hampshire.”

Cllr Kendal, who also runs his own business, is responsible for the council’s £111m environment budget, including road repairs, waste disposal and street lighting.

His department is planning to axe 111 jobs as part of the council’s plans to plug a £55m funding gap this year.
