Winchester College has been hosting a gathering of students from across the world – with the aim to start to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

The Winchester Symposium provides a way for pupils from different cultures to engage and learn from each other.

The college hosted seven visiting schools from four different continents in the first event of its kind in Winchester.

They are African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa; Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, USA; Johannes Kepler Grammar School, Prague, Czech Republic; Karachi Grammar School, Pakistan; Raffles Institution, Singapore; Nada School, Kobe, Japan; and Shiyan High School, Guangdong, China.

Each school had three delegates, two pupils and a teacher. In all there will be 24 participants. Five headteachers will also attend.

Problems posed by current economic global instability form the background to the meeting. The five-day residential symposium aimed to produce a thesis on practical steps can our countries take over the next 30 years to help build a global economy based on justice and solidarity, rather than self-interest and greed.
