THE award-winning film Sons of Cuba, directed by Andrew Lang from Sparsholt near Winchester, is to have its first showing on home turf.

His documentary about the Caribbean island’s national boxing academy will be at The Screen Cinema in Southgate Street, Winchester, on Tuesday, May 4.

It has already been shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and promoters hope to hold a series of screenings across Britain.

Many critics have already been impressed and the film scooped the Silver Marc’Aurelio award for best documentary at the Rome International Film Festival. It also won the same category at last year’s Los Angeles Latin American Film Festival.

Mr Lang spent four years in Latin America filming and researching the piece, which focuses on boxers as young as nine that are aiming to make their mark on the world stage.

For the screening in Winchester, Mr Lang’s father, Alistair, will be hosting a reception before the curtain goes up. It will be held to promote the work of Unicef in Cuba.
