Contemporary lighting efficient
SIR - Contrary to Mr Sudbury's letter published in the Hampshire Chronicle of April 3, regarding the lighting scheme for the Discovery Centre in Winchester, the lights in the pavement outside the centre do not point vertically upwards, but cast their light onto the face of the building.
They utilise specific lenses which direct the light forward and upwards towards the masonry walls and the generous soffit of the roof overhang.
During the design stage lighting trials were carried out to assess the optimum distance from the building for these low power high efficiency metal halide fittings.
There was no intention to light up the night sky,' but create a quality contemporary lighting scheme that is economical and only casts light where it is effective.
We are therefore not being profligate as he asserts.
Cllr Ken Thornber,
Leader, Hampshire County Council,
Winchester.
