Planners not helping situation
SIR - Few countries are blessed with such treasures of bygone days as this country.
The medieval barns in Michelmersh are cherished and lovingly looked after, particularly by Mr and Mrs Tony Roberts.
They have given both time and money over many years but, although rented out for village occasions, the cost of upkeep is an increasing burden.
The Grade II-listed long barn is in need of substantial repairs and to achieve this Mr Roberts and the trustees negotiated with a commercial firm to occupy a brick extension of the original buildings.
This was done with the approval of the residents.
The firm would ensure maintenance over the long-term and an immediate halt to the continued deterioration of the buildings.
Sadly, this well-intentioned and highly-desirable arrangement has met only with delay, obfuscation and opposition from the Test Valley planning committee.
William Jory,
Michelmersh,
Nr Romsey.
