County council should abandon plans to run rural post offices
SIR - The mere thought of Hampshire County Council taking over the running of Post Offices that are facing closure fills me with dread - as it should all other council taxpayers in the county.
When was the last time - if ever - any of the people at HCC ran an operation that was not propped up by what they see as a bottomless pit of money that is continually being filled by excessive council tax demands?
Even if HCC took on profitable operations - assuming any are on offer - I would be willing to bet that they will turn them into loss-makers in no time at all.
And, of course, there would be the need to set up yet another department at the Castle, staffed by highly paid directors (and their assistant directors); senior managers (and their assistants), etc., all on nice fat salaries and enrolled in the gold-plated, final-salary local government pension scheme.
This idea must be knocked on the head - immediately.
