Youngsters need more facilities
SIR - Congratulations to the organisers of Weekefields that took place at Dean Park on Saturday, April 5.
At last someone is prepared to get out and do something for the younger generation.
Though I don't have children, I am a Wintonian and have seen the demise of many facilities once available when I was a teenager.
The YMCA, KABC and the Recreation Centre all served to entertain with various activities.
Two of these have now disappeared to make way for housing; and the Recreation Centre, once council-operated, is now under private management and thus not as affordable to the masses.
Sadly, this city has placed too much emphasis on using land for luxury housing and apartments for young professionals, instead of considering the needs of those who already live there.
We possibly have the most pathetic cinema in terms of size and selection of films, though it probably satisfies our upper-middle class contingent.
There is no point constantly complaining about children hanging around street corners drinking, when we offer them very little else in entertainment.
In the usual political manner, the problem is attacked from the wrong angle.
Instead of wasting money on community safety officers and camera vans, the money could and should be spent on a proper centre for all to use.
Perhaps if our councillors spent less time taxing, banning and tree hugging and more time listening to the real people with real issues, they might gain more respect and more votes!
In fact part of the concession with the Waitrose/Aldi site should be to provide a decent community centre and facilities for youngsters.
N D Turnbull,
Tegdown Meads,
Winchester.
