Claim your benefit to pay council tax
SIR - Winchester City Council sets council tax rise at 4.8 per cent.
So... another blow to pensioners who are still reeling from recent hikes in fuel, food and water bills with the basic state pension nowhere near enough to cover the rapidly rising cost of living.
While council tax has almost doubled in the last 10 years, the basic state pension has increased by around a third.
But there might be something you can do about it.
Among benefits available to older people on low incomes, council tax benefit is the most unclaimed benefit of all, with up to 2.2 million older people nationwide missing out on up to £1.4 billion each year.
If you are an older person in the Winchester district living on a basic pension you could be entitled to claim.
So contact the WCC Benefits Office on 01962 848539 or for the silver surfers out there, go to the WCC website at www.winchester.co.uk and click on council tax to find out more.
Alternatively, give us a call and we will point you in the right direction.
Don't miss out on your entitlement. It's yours, you've earned it.
Mike Davies,
Age Concern,
Winchester.
